Kop Hill Climb Trophy Boxes
The Kop Hill Climb was established in 1910, one of several in the Chilterns at that time and is now the last competitive hill climb event in the UK.
It soon became a major speed event, with well-known competitors such as Donald Campbell, Raymond Mays and Count Zborowski taking part but this ended in 1925 after a spectator was injured.
Today, the Kop Hill Climb is a terrific fun event for all the family, organized by volunteers for a local charity called 'The Heart of Bucks'. There are classic car and motorcycle displays, children's soapbox races and a traditional spitfire and hurricane fly past.
Polmac (UK) Ltd was approached in April 2017 by David Banes, a Kop Hill Climb volunteer, to design and manufacture two wood presentation boxes to house the Beaumont Cup and the Peter Lewis Trophy, presented at the event.
At that time, the two trophies were kept in corrugated cardboard boxes and it was felt this 'outer packaging' did not reflect the quality and prestige of the competitions and the trophies.
The design of the two new trophy boxes was then discussed and agreed upon with Alison Ingram, a Kop Hill Climb committee member.
Both trophies were traditional silver cups with side handles and round black bases. However, the Peter Lewis Trophy was also mounted on a mahogany base with silver plate inscriptions.
It was therefore decided that the new trophy boxes were to have a natural mahogany wood stain finish, plated silver ironmongery and screen printed silver text on the lids, to match the cups and provide a consistent, high-quality finish.
The inside surfaces of the boxes were to be lined with a black 'flock' fabric finish to match the black coloured trophy bases.
The Beaumont Cup trophy box was designed as a standard rectangular box with a hinged lid, with the cup located horizontally in the base. The text was printed across the width of the lid, so this could be read when the box was displayed in a standing position, with the lid open.
The Peter Lewis Trophy, however, presented more of a challenge, due to its mahogany base.
It was decided to display this trophy in an upright position facing forward, with a hinged lid cut at a sharp downward angle. This meant that when the lid was opened the trophy could be clearly seen without being taken out of the box and would be displayed at it's very best.
The new Polmac Kop Hill Climb trophy boxes were delivered well ahead of the 2017 event. Both David Banes and Alison Ingram were delighted with the outcome.
